I fell in love last November.
I fell in love with Haiti.
At the end of a very busy wedding season, I took two weeks to travel through Haiti with an incredible group of occupational and physical therapists who comprise Team Canada Healing Hands. These incredible folks travel regularly to Haiti to work specifically with disabled children and their caregivers. I came along to photograph their work.
What I expected was to find was sadness, poverty, and despair.
What I found was laughter, hope, and incredible joy. I also found part of myself. For that, I am forever grateful.
We started in Île à Vache at one of Haiti’s many orphanages.
These children lit a fire in my heart. They taught me about family, cooperation, and determination. They reminded me to keep perspective, and to play with bubbles as often as possible.
I miss them every day.
Soeur Flora runs this orphanage. She gives every day of her life to her children, and the sparkle in her eyes reveals the joy her work brings. She is incredible.
After our week in Île à Vache, we went into the mountains to Jacmel where we worked with Pazapa – an organization that provides support and education to residents with disabilities.
To everyone who donated towards these incredible organizations, and who helped to fund my trip :: thank you.
These children are grateful for everything they have, and everything that your dollars helped to purchase. I hope you know that the smiles in the blog post are for you.
Thank you thank you.
I will see you soon, Haiti.
